It was the Spaniards who are said to have taken the habit of using nasal snuff to Europe. Long before then it's believed to have existed in Central- and South America. Before snuff became popular in England during the 1700s, it was better known in France and Scotland. In France, the use of the smokeless product snuff was banned by Louis XIII. It was only okay to use if you had it printed on a prescription by a doctor. Snuff was then believed, and still is by some able to stop colds. In church it was strictly forbidden to use snuff by Pope Urban XIII. Those who used snuff in church would be excommunicated. In Russia, the punishment for using tobacco products was a little harder. The penalty for being caught smoking was to be whipped. If they Caught you smoking again the penalty was execution. The penalty for the use of snuff was relatively mild. You only got your nose cut off. These sentences were determined by the Russian Tsar Michael I. The world's most popular snuff is the mixture called SP. The story behind the name SP is about a sea battle outside a Spanish port. The year was 1702 when the Spanish sailing ship was attacked by an Anglo-Dutch fleet. The Spanish sailing ship was captured and it turned out to contain a large quantity of snuff. This snuff was sold in London and became known as the "Spanish" and then shortened down to only SP. During the 1800s, snuff was scattered all over the world. Snuff boxes were decorated and worn as jewelry and given away as precious and valuable gifts. Snuff is a smokeless product that is composed of fine ground flavored tobacco. It includes not only tobacco but also natural fragrances and water. In the beginning the name snuff meant dry snuff, a dry brown tobacco powder. Today, there are also moist snuff. Usually the snuff is perfumed, but not always. There are all sorts of different flavors, for example: raspberry, apricot, menthol and vanilla. The tobacco leaf that suits best for the making of a great snuff is found in Africa.
